FOR A BOY TO BE A MAN

For one who eats little pepper, I have known men hot- burning and spicy.

Femi taught me a woman’s skirt need not be long, only short enough to be interesting.

Emmanuel said to tour the world was to know Sola, Madeley, Fatima, Ngozi, Aniké.

And Ola showed me how a lady’s legs must part like the Red Sea.

But beneath their noise, my mother’s steady, single rhyme says:

For a boy to be a man, he must first learn to respect a woman.
